Ayn Rand & God pt.1
March 15, 2009 by admin
AHS will periodically do a brief critical analysis of Ayn Rand’s views on particular topics she devoted her time to in her life. She was without a doubt one of the great thinkers of our time. The first installments of this series will go over the generalities of her view on abortion and God. This will be written as a lay response to a very intricate and involved Objectivist philosophy that incorporates realism and the rejection of metaphysics.
Ayn Rand was an admitted atheist with hints of agnosticism. She believed that man should be primarily concerned with the reality and realism of his world. God to Ayn Rand was supernatural and metaphysical. This meant that God could not be known or proven with any validity to a rational person. God is known by faith alone.
AHS response:
Ayn Rand was a remarkable thinker. However, she did not realize that she was using the poor arguments given by the believers of a God to justify her position of non-belief. From the information that has been put out by her, because a good argument has not been presented to her that means the belief in a God is irrational.
An argument for God can be made. First, however, the description that is commonly given of God must be put to rest. The description of a Zeus look alike sitting on a throne is wholly inaccurate. God has been personified for the easy consumption for believers. A God that can be real, rational, and supernatural is too complicated for the masses to understand. Ayn Rand relies too much on her own and mankind’s limited ability to experience the world and universe to understand how God could exist. What Ayn Rand failed to address is how man’s mental and physical limitations factor into her denial of a god. Even though she passed away over 25 years ago, it was well known then that man’s auditory and visual capabilities are limited. It was also well known that we have only scratched the surface of the known universe much less the unknown universe. Considering the relative observed order of the universe, how can Ayn Rand believe that there is no God just because clergy men have failed to make an effective argument for God’s existence?
God exist. However, this being exists in a form that is not known to many church goers. God can be seen and felt. Just the same as you are able to see the stars and feel the Earth’s air. God can be heard in Yellowstone Park. So, it comes down to how a person is told to view God or constructs God in their mind which will decide whether or not a belief in a God is permissible.
The ways men have used God in their lives have made intellectual superior people like Ayn Rand steer away from his existence. God does not need to be pushed on the unbeliever if God is described in a manner that encapsulates his omnipresence.
