Is Homosexuality a Sin?

February 13, 2009 by

For most Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, and Buddhist, the answer is undoubtedly yes. These major religions all shun this behavior as it is counter to the manner in which humans beings were anatomically designed to act sexually.

However, even though the answer to this question is yes, there are some caveats to this answer. On a certain level, the answer to whether homosexuality is wrong can be accurately given a yes AND no answer. That is correct. To a degree, a yes and no answer can be given to judge this abberant behavior.

Specifically, if a person acts out their homosexual urge, they have committed a sin according to the beliefs of the five major religions. It is the act that is being judged not necessarily the urge or the accompanying thoughts of homosexuality.

On the other hand, if a person is not acting out their urges and thoughts, and control themselves, then the answer to whether the disposition to be homosexual would be no.

The problem with the urges and thoughts, however, is at times they can take control of our capability to logically reason. If lust, envy, jealousy has taken over our hearts and minds regarding homosexuality, the urge or thought can be considered a sin. Specifically, according to Christianity, a persons actions and thoughts must be “pure”. The thoughts become impure when they turn fanatical and obessive.

Our minds were designed to wander. So, it is reasonable to assume a fleeting thought about something is normal. However, when that thought, with or without accompanying action, engulfs us that is when it becomes a sin.

The major philosophies and religions tend to address the act or the thoughts that lead to the action. These religions realized, to their credit, that it is impossible to try to regulate every thought a person will have. It was more feasible to try to set guidelines on how humans should act towards one another.

At every instance, the act of homosexuality is opposite to how humans were designed to function. However, in some cases, if a person has a mental disability that prohibits them from making good judgments then the reason for the act is not a sin.

A physiological or psychological dysfunction can lead a person to commit homosexual acts. So where they maybe unable to control themselves, which would be no fault of their own, the act itself is what draws condemnation from the vast majority of people on the planet.

This is probably the one time that I will fervently disagree with you. A person doesn’t have to be mentally unstable to be homosexual. Although it does not match up with our physiological makeup, some people just are. In the case of religion you may be right, but that is only a belief and religion is not the end all be all of morally thinking. Simply look at the past history of the Catholic church for that one…But then who says we’ll agree on everything…we hardly do…ain’t nothing but a thing

Whether you are mentally stable or unstable the act of homosexuality is a sin. Obsessive and lustful thoughts, as mentioned in this article, is a sin. God makes this very clear in His Word. A correct statement has been made in the comments above.” A person does not have to be mentally unstable to be homosexual.” The writer of this article was merely stating……IF…….a person happened to be mentally unstable. A mental illness or psychological problem is not in any way justification for sin. It is because of sin that people suffer from these issues. It’s not always there own sin, but the sin of there parents or grandparents and so on. The Lord God has cursed generations of people because of there forefathers sins, and it will continue because so many people refuse to turn away from their sin, be it a Christian or non-Christian. They will continue to blame others, physical or mental disabilities, and anything else they can come up with until their eyes are opened to the reality that God does exist and means what He says in HIs Word. I hope that anyone involved in homosexuality will turn away from their sin and focus on the guidelines God has set for our lives.
